Another celebrity kicked off of 'Dancing'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Soccer star Hope Solo has been kicked off of "Dancing With the Stars."
Solo was eliminated from the ABC ballroom competition Tuesday after finishing in last place during the semifinal performance round. Dancing for the mirror ball trophy Monday will be actor and Army veteran J.R. Martinez, TV personality Ricki Lake and reality star Rob Kardashian.
"Instead of winning the mirror ball trophy, I'm going to try and win a gold medal this summer at the Olympics," said a smiling Solo, who won gold in the 2008 Olympics, after learning her fate.
She didn't seem quite as happy during Monday's semifinals. In backstage footage shown Tuesday, Solo was seen complaining about her scores and telling the judges, "kiss my booty."
Solo and professional partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy came into Tuesday's episode with 49 points — nearly 20 points less than first-place finisher Lake.
Judges' scores are combined with viewer votes to determine which contestant is sent home each week.
Each semifinalist performed two routines in addition to competing in a "cha-cha relay," where all four couples danced to the same song.
Kardashian and partner Cheryl Burke won the relay and finished second overall. Lake and partner Derek Hough came in second place during the relay. Martinez was third and Solo was last.
Solo said Tuesday that "Dancing With the Stars" is "one of the toughest competitions I've ever been a part of."
She joins previously eliminated contestants Nancy Grace, Carson Kressley, David Arquette, Chaz Bono, Chynna Phillips, Elisabetta Canalis, Metta World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest) and Kristin Cavallari.
Tuesday's episode also featured an appearance by the Muppets and a performance by Cobra Starship.

Brad Pitt Grows Out His Hair Again: Time For An Intervention?

Brad Pitt is officially turning into Johnny Depp: another matinee idol who masks his good looks with unsexy facial hair. Pitt turned up in Tokyo this week for the premiere of "Moneyball" sporting a distressingly shaggy stoner mane and salt-and-pepper goatee.
Is he regrowing his weird beard? Let's hope not. [Editor's note: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.]
Pitt and Angelina Jolie left the kids at home to hit the red-carpet premiere as a Hollywood supercouple on Wednesday night: Jolie looked striking in a red dress and matching lipstick, while Pitt regressed back to the grungy, surfer-dude look he sported before doing the U.S. promotional circuit for "Moneyball."
The actor certainly knows how to sell a movie/passion project: he cleaned himself up to remind everyone of his "Thelma & Louise" days and stirred up some good old-fashioned controversy by insulting his long-suffering ex-wife. We kind of miss that Brad Pitt.

Doctor turned serial killer in World War II Paris

TOKYO (Reuters) - Nazi-occupied Paris was a terrible place to be in the waning days of World War II, with Jews, Resistance fighters and ordinary citizens all hoping to escape. Disappearances became so common they often weren't followed up.
And one man used the lawlessness for his own terrible purposes, killing perhaps as many as 150 people.
Yet it wasn't until thick black smoke seeped into buildings in a fashionable part of the city that firefighters and police were called to an elegant townhouse where they found body parts scattered around -- setting off a manhunt that led them, eventually, to Marcel Petiot.
The crime was very much of its time, said David King, who chronicled the hunt for Petiot in "Death in the City of Light."
"Paris was not a good place to be. A lot of people were trying to leave Paris, a lot of people just disappearing. He had it plotted out, a very devious plan," said King, in a telephone interview.
"Respect for the law was tarnished under the Nazis. Even if you suspected something, a lot of people were very, very reluctant to go forward, especially if they were Jewish."
Petiot, as it turned out, was a respected physician who turned serial killer by night, preying largely on Jews desperate to leave Paris by luring them in with promises of escape. He was accused of murdering "only" some 27, but authorities suspected his real toll was far higher.
King, a former history professor, first stumbled across reference to the killings while browsing in a bookstore and picking up a World War Two memoir by a spy. At first, he couldn't believe what he read.
But the grisly details stuck with him, and after he confirmed the story was true, he finished his other projects and came back to it.
"Here's a guy -- Marcel Petiot, who was accused of all the murders. Obviously very intelligent, charismatic, has a respected position, is into collecting antiques, interested in the arts," he said.
"And yet, you get to the other side, when he's accused of some of the most disturbing things you can think of: savagely dismembering bodies."
Through years of research, including perusal of Parisian police archives closed since the crimes took place, King pieced together the story of how Petiot claimed to be a member of the resistance and lured many of his victims in by promising them safe passage to South America in return for payment.
Once in Petiot's hands, the victims were told to write letters to their relatives, telling them that they were fine and would return once times had settled down. Then they were killed, most likely by lethal gas, and dismembered or burned.
"It's a microcosm of the whole Nazi terror and Paris being a bad place to be. There's got to be more than just exploiting peoples' hopes and dreams and desperation, but that's what he does," King said.
Though Petiot eluded police on at least one occasion, after appearing amid the crowd that gathered after the initial grisly discovery and speaking with a patrolman before riding off on his bicycle, he was eventually captured, tried and executed.
King, the author of several other books, said this one was particularly hard to immerse himself in due to the content, however horrifically fascinating the story.
It also had an impact on him personally.
"I'm generally a pretty outgoing person, but I'm probably a little bit more reluctant about things now," he said.
"Dr. Petiot seemed like the nicest guy -- charming, intelligent, friendly. You could just strike up a conversation with somebody like this ... I found myself on my guard more."

'Dancing' Loses Another Celeb, One Week Before The Semifinals

Four couples are heading through to the Season 13 semifinals on "Dancing with the Stars."
The ballroom jury, however, has spoken and host Nancy Grace and her partner - first time professional (former troupe member) Tristan MacManus - will not be joining them.
On Tuesday, the HLN host was eliminated from the competition, taking Tristan out of the game too.
"I am so proud, but I really cannot take the credit," Nancy said after learning the news.
Turning to her partner, Nancy praised her Irish ballroom hunk, who she - at times - appeared to have a tense relationship with - for getting her just shy of the semifinals.
"It's been all Tristan from the get go, and the whole crew from 'Dancing with the Stars,' my family who flew out here to take care of my twins so I could dance, all of you and especially to you Trist -- thank you," she said, caressing the 29-year-old's face.
"Nice," a surprised Tristan responded. "That's [it], all paid off now."
While it's a competition for the celebs, Tristan managed to get his partner further than many more seasoned "DWTS" alumni, and he shared his gratitude with the audience for embracing the pair.
"Thanks for being very welcoming to me and also to Nancy and we've really, really had a fun time and it's the support that we get from you all that really pushes us on to do it, and we can't be disappointed to make [it] this far," he said. "From the start, we've always said to each other, it's not about being the best, it's just about doing your best and I think that's what we did."
"DWTS" returns with the semifinals on Monday at 8/7C on ABC with Rob Kardashian, Ricki Lake, Hope Solo and J.R. Martinez competing for mirrorball glory.

Mark Ballas Writes About The Top 5 Couples On Dancing With The Stars Season 13

Mark Ballas has written a new blog for what he thinks of the top five couples left on Dancing With The Stars for USA Today. He goes through their strong points for why they have made it this far which you can read about below. Be sure to read the full blog at the link for he also has some special words for David Arquette. He’s looking forward to the finals and dancing with Kristin Cavallari again.

It this point it is clear that Ricki (Lake) and Derek (Hough) make a great couple. Ricki has really proven herself over the course of the season. Not only is Ricki a good dancer but she also plays the characters well each week and that’s what it takes to seal the deal. She even is dancing through a rib injury right now but still remains at the top of the leaderboard. I expect she’ll stay there throughout the rest of the show and will make it into the finals.

J.R. (Martinez), according to Len, had a “substandard” week. Yes, he made a few mistakes but it only makes the man human. If you have learned anything about J.R. from the show, you know that he is a fighter and will come back this week with a strong and on-point routine. Some of J.R.’s strengths are his speed and ability to be light on his feet. These two characteristics are extremely important when it comes to ballroom dancing.

Hope (Solo) is back! She performed one of her best dances last week and I can’t wait to see what she has in store. Many of the athletes on the show have done a tremendous job of transforming into dancers. Some of the great qualities about Hope are that she has tremendous speed and endurance. This allows her to perform well on show days and can help her stay focused during the long rehearsal hours. At this point, everyone is exhausted which translates into mental challenges. Professional athletes know how to push themselves and Hope is no different. This will continue to help her throughout the remainder of the show.

Nancy (Grace) keeps on improving week after week and as she said Tuesday night, “it’s not over until it’s over.” I think she has been overlooked this season but she is right, until she’s eliminated, she also has a good shot at winning the mirror ball trophy. Len loves when routines stay traditional and her partner Tristan (MacManus) has done a really good job of choreographing the routines that way. She has become very precise in her dance routines and that is a big reason in how she has made it this far.

Rob’s (Kardashian) biggest strength is that he is a quick learner. This is crucial during the long season of Dancing with the Stars. If a celebrity can catch on fast, it allows for more time in rehearsal for fine-tuning the routine. Rob has been very consistent all season and I believe that this consistency will carry him into the finals. He has a lot to bring to the dance floor and his dedication will show in the next couple of weeks.

Peanuts During Pregnancy: Are They Dangerous?

Kate Middleton sparked a pregnancy rumor by refusing to eat peanut paste during a recent royal visit to a UNICEF famine relief center in Copenhagen, even though her husband and their hosts, the Danish Crown Prince and his wife, all happily sampled the food. Kate, 29, was caught on camera giving Prince William a knowing smile as he scrutinized the product’s label, ABC News reports.

Further fueling speculation that she may be carrying an heir to the throne is the Palace’s emphatic announcement that Kate “has no nut allergy whatsoever,” so doesn’t have any other medical reason to shun peanuts. If she is expecting, Kate may be smart to say no to the legume, since new research suggests that eating peanuts during pregnancy may raise the risk of some babies developing potentially life-threatening peanut allergies, which have risen sharply among kids over the past decade.

Pregnancy and Peanut Allergy

There’s long been medical debate about how much of a threat eating peanuts during pregnancy actually poses. Years ago, in a bid to prevent peanut allergies, which can sometimes be fatal, the American Academy of Pediatrics briefly advised high-risk women to avoid the legumes when pregnant or breastfeeding. The group withdrew the recommendation in 2008 and issued a revision statement saying the impact of eating or avoiding peanuts during pregnancy was unclear.

To be on the safe side, moms-to-be may want to follow Kate Middleton’s example. Last year, however, a study published in Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology reported that babies with signs of other food allergies may be at higher risk for peanut allergies if their moms ingested peanuts during pregnancy. Those whose moms ate the most peanuts during the third trimester of pregnancy were most likely to have babies with peanut sensitivity.

How risky is eating peanuts during pregnancy?

The study didn’t prove that eating peanuts during pregnancy triggers peanut allergies in kids. The research merely shows that babies whose moms ate peanuts showed strong sensitivity to the legumes when given standard skin-prick allergy tests. In the study, the researchers evaluated 503 babies with likely signs of allergies to eggs or milk, based on skin-prick tests, or food-allergy related skin rashes. 140 of the babies had a strong sensitivity to peanuts, with this reaction strongly linked to peanut consumption by their moms during pregnancy.

However, the researchers point out a need for further research. “Our study looked at sensitization, not peanut allergy,” study researcher Scott H. Sicherer, MD, of New York’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine told WebMD. “It is going to be a few years before we know whether these children really do develop true peanut allergies.” Dr. Sicherer doesn’t see a need to update the AAP guidelines, because there still not enough evidence to tell for sure if eating peanuts during pregnancy causes kids to develop lifelong allergies, as opposed to temporary sensitivity.

Lindsey Vonn is going to homecoming with a 15-year-old skier

Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn has walked red carpets at award shows, movie premieres and fashion shows but had never gone to a high school dance. That will change Friday night.
Vonn will be attending a Colorado high school's homecoming dance with a 15-year-old student who asked her to go the day before.
She detailed the story on her Facebook page:
Yesterday I visited the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy and while I was eating lunch with all the students a 15 year old boy named Parker asked me if I would be his date for their homecoming dance which is tonight. When Parker asked me he was cute, nervous and very polite so of course I said YES! :) All through school growing up I never got the chance to go to a school dance so I'm excited for tonight! :) xo LV
Parker is a modern day hero. Thirty hours before the dance he doesn't have a date, then he has the gumption to ask a famous athlete who, amazingly, says yes, and now he's bringing a gold medalist/Sports Illustrated swimsuit model to his homecoming. And not only is he bringing her, but she's excited about it!
That, my friends, is the American dream.

Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Stars

Eddie Murphy is in desperate need of some career rehab. The "Saturday Night Live" alum used to be a sure thing in Hollywood. His family-friendly comedies like "Dr. Doolittle" and "The Nutty Professor" earned more than $250 million globally each and helped make Murphy one of the highest-paid stars in the industry.
But over the past few years the comedian has struggled. Two of his most recent films, "Imagine That" and "Meet Dave," were colossal failures. Murphy was paid millions up front to star in the films, but neither one earned back its production budget at the box office. "Meet Dave" earned only $51 million on a budget of $60 million. "Imagine That" did even worse. It earned $23 million on a budget of $55 million.
Those disasters turned Murphy into the second most overpaid star in Hollywood by our calculations. For every $1 Murphy was paid in salary we found that his recent films have returned an average $2.70. To put that in perspective, Nicole Kidman, who ranks 10th on our overpaid list, returns $6.70 for every buck she is paid.
So it’s no surprise to see the 50-year-old Murphy in career-building mode. It helps that he has director Brett Ratner on his side. Ratner helmed Murphy’s latest film, "Tower Heist," which hits theaters Friday. Murphy stars as a thief who helps Ben Stiller and a motley crew of amateurs rob a Bernie Madoff-like financier who has stolen their pension money. Early reviews have been decent. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter says that “however far-fetched [the film] is all but irresistible in its criminal legitimacy and its promise of just desserts.”
If the movie is a hit, it will go a long way toward improving Murphy’s reputation and his ability to offer studios a better return on investment. Murphy is also slated to host the Oscars ceremony (which Ratner is production) next February.
Another consolation: compared to Drew Barrymore, Murphy is a financial superstar. The actress tops our 2011 list of Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Actors, returning just 40 cents (not a misprint) for every dollar the studios spend on her. Barrymore doesn’t earn as much as someone like Murphy but her recent films have performed horribly at the box office. Her 2009 film "Everybody’s Fine" earned only $16 million globally and her 2007 film "Lucky You" brought in only $8 million.
To create our list we looked at the 40 highest-earning actors in Hollywood. To qualify, each had to have starred in at least three movies in the past five years that opened in more than 500 theaters. Movies that opened after May 1 of this year were not counted.
We also didn’t look at animated films because the stars aren’t really the draw. So Murphy doesn’t get credit for the "Shrek" movies where he voiced Donkey. Those films have brought in a total $3 billion at the global box office.
We used data gathered for our annual Celebrity 100 list to calculate each star's estimated earnings on each film (including up-front pay and any earnings from the movie's box-office receipts and first year sales of DVDs). We then looked at each movie's estimated budget (not including marketing costs, which are susceptible to accounting chicanery) and box-office and DVD earnings to figure out an operating income for each film.
We added up each star's compensation on his or her last three films and the operating income on those films, and divided total operating income by the star's total compensation to come up with a return-on-investment number. The final number represents an average of how much a studio earns for every dollar paid.
Will Ferrell, who topped our list of overpaid celebrities for the past two years, ranks third this time with a $3.50 return for every $1 he was paid. Ferrell’s number improved thanks to his 2010 comedy "The Other Guys" which brought in a total $170 million at the global box office. Unfortunately for Ferrell, he still has to live with "Land of the Lost" which earned only $70 million on a $100 million budget.
Just behind Ferrell is actress Reese Witherspoon. The Oscar winner can’t seem to score a hit lately, returning just $3.55 for every dollar she gets paid. A big reason for her low number: last year’s "How Do You Know." The romantic comedy (which co-starred Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson) cost an estimated $120 million to produce and brought in only $50 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top five: Denzel Washington. For every $1 Washington was paid his films earned an average $4.25. Looking at the box office of Washington’s last three films it might be hard to see how he made our list. Unstoppable earned $167 million and "The Book of Eli" earned $157 million. But Washington is an actor who can command as much as $20 million per film. At those prices, movies have to do much better than Washington’s have at the box office in order for him to offer a solid return on investment.

Jennifer Lopez: I Fired Manager Who Told Me to Lose Weight

Jennifer Lopez does many things -- she sings, she acts, she designs a clothing line -- but the thing she is best known for is her dangerous curves. Surprisingly, though, as the 42-year-old reveals to her former "Monster in Law" co-star Jane Fonda, who interviews her in the new issue of Glamour, she once had a manager who had the nerve to tell her to lose weight. Fortunately, Jennifer gave him the heave-ho instead.
"I was just so infuriated that somebody said you couldn't have a little extra meat on you -- because I was by no means fat!" the mother of twins Max and Emme says. "That was so mean and closed-minded. I was like: 'No, this is who I am and this is the type of woman that I grew up with and it was beautiful and there's no reason to be anybody but myself.'"
The "American Idol" judge, who announced her split with husband Marc Anthony in July, has a figure most women would die for, which means that no one is asking her to shed pounds these days.
"No, I don't get that now," she says. "I think people know better."
J.Lo also confesses that while her bikini body is currently no longer an issue, she hasn't ruled out plastic surgery in the future.
"Honestly, I'm not going to make a judgment on it because I don't have to yet," Jennifer says candidly. "I mean, I'd like to think I'll feel great about myself and age gracefully, but then I think: 'Well, what if I do want a little bit of something?' I'm open to being open."
Read more about Jennifer, who Glamour chose as its Woman of the Year, in the December issue.

James Bond Press Conference Confirms ‘Skyfall’ Is Finally Coming, With a New Bond Girl

This morning in London, Sony Pictures had a big press conference about the next James Bond movie, the one that has been rumored and delayed and speculated about for months upon years. Sitting up there on stage were Daniel Craig, and Judi Dench, and director Sam Mendes and even Javier Bardem, who is gonna play the bad guy. It really happened. The movie is totally coming now. They had a press conference: They can't back out at this point.
The more prurient of you are probably wondering: "So, who's the hot Bond girl?" Well, you Y-chromosome-driven Beavis: It's Bérénice Marlohe, a French model who has, in fact, never appeared in an English-speaking movie before. (She has barely been in any French-speaking ones.)
She will play "a glamorous, enigmatic character named Severin." That's to say: A Bond girl. If you want to know a bit more about what she looks like -- and we suspect you do -- JoBlo.com has the definitive photo gallery.

Onto the other news: According to the press conference, they are starting shooting ... today. Probably a good idea, considering the movie is expected to be out a year from now. There were lots of news items to come out of the press conference, but here's the most impressive one to us: James Bond now has a Twitter! Obviously, the handle is @007. That Twitter account gave out all kinds of details about the film during the press conference. Here are the key ones:
"The title of Bond 23 will be....Skyfall." That's the first one-word Bond title since "GoldenEye," a forgettable Bond film known mostly for an awesome Nintendo 64 game.
"Ben Whishaw, Ralph Fiennes and Albert Finney will all be joining the Skyfall cast." We would watch Albert Finney chew on straw for two hours.
"Javier Bardem will play Skyfall's villain." So there's official confirmation of that, in case you were wondering why he was on stage.
"Director Sam Mendes says Skyfall "is its own story. It doesn't connect with the last two movies." This is good. We were already tired of the "guilty Bond" storyline.
The movie will film in London, Istanbul, Shanghai and Scotland and be released next fall. It'll be the first Bond film since "Quantum of Solace" in 2008, a film that left most neither shaken nor stirred. But the goodwill of "Casino Royale," and Craig's total reboot of the character, still goes a long way, particularly with that cast. We're excited. "Skyfall!"
